More details
Subscriptions to UK professional bodies are exempt from income tax. So if we found an institute for Perl programmers we have a tax-efficient way of raising money for the advancement of Perl knowledge.
Obviously it's only worth doing the hoop-jumping to set up such a body if people will join it. I'll put the effort in to set it up if 10 people will pledge to be members.
I envisage there being several different membership levels, for employees, sole traders, hobbyists, students, missionaries, and so on.
And it seems that some organizations will pay for their employees' subscriptions to professional bodies, so you may be able to get somebody else to pay for your membership!
