The New York Court of Appeals held that owners of property located in close proximity to high-voltage lines are entitled to damages when 'cancerphobia' lowers the value of their property, even in the absence of confirmed proof of a health risk. (Criscuola v Power Authority of the State of New York - see Google). Could it be argued that the same principle should apply to radio masts and pylons in the UK?

I'd love to attend, but unfortunately live a long way away - in surrey. I'm currently fighting a proposal by Hutchinson for a mast 30m from the end of my garden.

The reason I'm worried? - the voice of reason from the scientific community continues to urge 'precautionary measures' when siting mobile phone masts, because we simply don't know whether they have long term health effects.

But as yet, there's no evidence of any caution in the planning procedures. Why do Hutchinson need a mast 30m from my garden and my kids when we live in a rural area with miles of open country? Surely there are more *appropriate* sites.

I was very disappointed when Andrew Stunell MP's private members bill ran out of time before the election. It would have enabled health concerns to be a valid reason for rejection. I guess Labour's hands are tied because they earned so much money auctioning the 3G licenses. Thank you Jo for taking up this issue locally!! Please keep fighting, and let us know what we can do to help nationally!!!

The most convincing argument to be found about the dangers of mobile phone technology is the Freiburger Appeal. 50 German doctors with no axe to grind and no vested interests use their professional judgement to list the symptoms they consider associated with mobile phones, masts and base stations. And as for ICNIRP guidelines, they're based on studies concerned only with the effect microwaves have on heating the body, not any other health issues.

Some people need to do some research on mobile phone masts and health! ICNIRP guidelines are the only protection the public has against excessive exposure to electromagnetic emissions from phone masts. Who checks up on this when masts are mushrooming in an area, eg East Dunbartonshire? Total exposures should be a key question at your meeting. Good Luck with it!

Why do you (pledge author) consider a public meeting necessary or desirable? What is your problem with phone masts?

(I'm not local so wouldn't attend; but I don't understand the controversy, and I certainly don't understand the first comment -- what is an 'inappropriately sited mast' -- one that doesn't work?)

The Baljaffray Residents Association is currently objecting to 3 proposed inappropriately sited Mobile Phone Masts in our Area.
We have already been successful in one application (Hutchison 3G) being declined by East Dunbartonshire Council at a Public hearing.
We are not against Mobile Phone Masts, but we are against inappropriately sited Masts.
