I'm currently fighting a proposal by Hutchinson for a mast 30m from the end of my garden. The reason I'm worried? - the voice of reason from the scientific community continues to urge 'precautionary measures' when siting mobile phone masts, because we simply don't know whether they have long term health effects. But as yet, there's no evidence of any caution in the planning procedures. Why do Hutchinson need a mast 30m from my garden and my kids when we live in a rural area with miles of open country? Surely there are more *appropriate* sites. I was very disappointed when Andrew Stunell MP's private members bill ran out of time before the election. It would have enabled health concerns to be a valid reason for rejection. I guess Labour's hands are tied because they earned so much money auctioning the 3G licenses. ICNIRP guidelines are the only protection the public has against excessive exposure to electromagnetic emissions from phone masts. Who checks up on this when masts are mushrooming in an area, eg East Dunbartonshire? Total exposures should be a key question at your meeting. We have already been successful in one application (Hutchison 3G) being declined by East Dunbartonshire Council at a Public hearing. We are not against Mobile Phone Masts, but we are against inappropriately sited Masts.
