I already give 1% (actually more) to several different charities, so I thought I'd join the pledge. One percent is really not that hard to part with.

So far we sponsor a child in Africa, give to a 'cleanup' charity, pay for trees to be planted to make up in some small way for the CO2 from our car, and support the NSPCC. We were pretty smug.

Then I added it up and it STILL does not get to 1% of our income!

Thanks for making us think - and we'll be thinking about it more often now.

Cheers for the comment John. It's brilliant that you've signed up to give 1% anyway - I think a few others have also done that.

However, the original pledge did fail nonetheless, and the point of pledgebank is to get an agreement to do something if other people will. That's why I've set-up the new pledge.

I must be missing the point here.
I signed up for the original pledge as it was one of those things that I always meant to get around to doing but never did.

Since pledging to sign up for "just 1%" I have gone away and set up the direct debits and done it.

So although I never got to hold hands with 399 new friends, the charities are benefitting by just a little bit more.

I wouldn't worry too much about the pledge failing, I doubt anyone who cares enough to put their name down would back out, and you have already encouraged plenty of us to donate (more). Even if the targets are not met, I would say the pledge has been a great sucess.

(As a side benefit, One of the comments on the other pledge lead to Norfolk County Council becoming registered at the 'http://allaboutgiving.org' site for tax relief on donations.)

Hello ,
I am just leaving my comment here to say that 1 % does not sound like a lot but if loads of people does the pledge it will be loads.
Thank you for your time

Thanks for all your comments guys.

In response to Tom's comment, you're right in saying that 1% isn't a lot. However, it is a start and much better than giving nothing at all. It is pretty manageable for most of us!

Jay - I could have done it for more over a longer period, but I'm paranoid about the pledge failing! Thus far I've only got about 1/3 of people who signed up before (eek!). I'd rather go over target instead of it failing again :(

Thanks for all your support!!

You had 130 peeps sign the old non-successful 1% pledge, if they all sign this one its going to be a bit of an anti-climax. Why not go for 150 or 200 with a longer date?

Though this is a good thing, 1% isn't really very much. According to a report on philanthropy published in Jan 2005:

"of those households that donate, the wealthiest fifth give less than 1 per cent of their income while the poorest fifth give almost 3 per cent"

I used to work as a so-called "charity mugger" getting people to sign up for a monthly direct debt on the street. Students and pensioners were consistently more generous, as were those who already had one or more direct debits set-up.

1% is an improvement on 0%, but it could be higher :)
