More details
Offsetting is not the solution but its better than nothing - its our repsonsibility as a collective to do at least something before its too late.

http://www.carbonneutral.com/ is a useful site where people can check their individual emissions and what that equates to in cost to offset (usually around £5-10 for European return trips)

  • I have a problem with the information quoted on the carbon neutral website. I have done some searches on the internet and research suggests that growing trees can consume 13-48lb (5.9-21.8kg) of cO2 per year. The carbon neutral website says I only need one tree per 1 tonne of cO2. My calculations show I need 45. Can anyone explain If my figures are wrong or theirs are?

  • My guess is that it has something to do with the way that it's hard to quantify the CO2 affects of planting trees. I'm really more of a fan of companies like Terrapass who use recs and carbon credits to offset car/flight CO2, as they seem a little more verifiable.

  • Land Rover have also gone for the carbon credits approach in their new sustainability program.

  • ClimateCare run the landrover program. They are much more expensive than terrapass though.
  • climatecare.org seems to give lower CO2 estimates than carbonneutral.com, but price-per-tonne seems to be very similar.

As far as I can tell terrapass doesn't cover UK-origin flights, does it?

Another thing about climatecare.org is that they make sure to invest in projects beyond those already included in Kyoto Protocol commitments.

  • Terrapass does cover UK-origin flights, though if it doesn't accept the city you'll probably do better with the airport code.
