Want to help save the world!?
Giving up meat is probably as effective at reducing your carbon footprint as giving up motorised transport! (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9). If emissions don't drop by 6.5% per year, the planet could be ruined beyond repair before the end of our lifetime (11). Consumers drive the behaviour of companies and governments, so we have the power to stop this and it starts at the dinner table! Each time we step into the supermarket, we are casting our vote.
Scientists from the UN have repeatedly urged a shift to a diet of less meat as an effective way for individuals to combat global hunger, fuel, poverty and climate change (1, 9). Climate change and emerging infectious disease have been identified as the two greatest threats to humanity and modern animal farming practices contribute hugely to both (video 12).
There are roughly 7 billion humans in the world. Our species kills well over 80 billion members of other animal species every year (3, 10). There is nothing natural about this imbalance, and it is why we are destroying our ecosystem. From another perspective, many of us feel deeply uncomfortable with the ways humans use animals, especially in factory farms - this is highlighted in the film Earthlings (video 13).
The average vegetarian spares around 30 land animals and 400 land and sea animals each year (2). They also reduce their carbon footprint as effectively as if they stopped using planes, trains and automobiles!
But cold turkey can be difficult, so I did some maths... 7 Meatless Mondayers = 1 Vegetarian!
This Christmas, why not pledge to help reduce climate change and leave a better world as a gift for your family? Leave meat off your plate for one day per week all year, and contribute positively to the future of our planet. I put all the links below so we can learn more about how our farming practices impact our world. Understanding the issues so we can make responsible choices in our diet is a huge first step in doing our bit for a better planet.
Please join me and pledge as a Meatless Mondayer, you can do so here and at www.meatlessmonday.com. You can download a certificate to sign and give to your family here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bwi8XsZ...
