More details
Regardless of the political spin you put upon it, the Stern report (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6098...) is pretty scary. There's a lot of stuff to sort out; we've got to slash our carbon dioxide production, for a start.

But just because it's a big task doesn't mean that small gestures won't help - especially when it's done on a large scale. Which is why I'm changing all the bulbs in my home to low-energy ones, and urging you to do the same.

Yes, there's a certain outlay to buy them, but they're relatively cheap in places like Ikea and last longer than conventional ones. Also, they'll save you money on bills, and - of course - less electricity used means less carbon dioxide being emitted as a result.

It's a small step, but every small step is worth it. And the more people you can encourage to do the same, the greater the benefit we'll all produce.

What's your reason not to try?

Thanks
Steve

  • Already replaced all my lightbulbs years ago. A brilliant investment.
  • I have replaced all of my bulbs with cf low watt bulbs.I am now saving 1600 watts per hour or 1.6 kw. This is based on every light in the house being on for 1 hour. Hope LED technology continues to get better. This will really help the future of energy.

  • I've already done it - the payback period is less than 6 months, and dropping.

Why have a pledge for something that could say you money in less than 1 year, and the hassel of not changing a bulb again?

  • My only concern is with the cheaper energy saver bulbs (like the Ikea ones) that often have a lifespan of not much more than a year. The environmental cost of making these things is higher than that of a traditional bulb and so if the lifespan is similar then this eats into the energy savings when you look at the total net energy cost. Also they present a potentially higher environmental risk when incorrectly disposed of.

I urge people doing this to buy quality bulbs, they may cost more initially but they offer better light and quicker starting as well as lasting longer.

  • I already switched years ago and have replaced all the incandescent bulbs in three houses so far, saving a large amount of money and also the time and inconvenience of changing lightbulbs.
  • I think it saves money in the long run, and the upfront cost is not too onerous.

  • Yep, did that too and the cost may put us off but there is way less heat and electricity being wasted and a quite a lot of money being saved. Do not think about it just do it.
