www.worldcommunitygrid.org is a site that uses your computer -- when you're away or not using it -- to research tiny packets of information for scientists working on any number of philanthropic causes. Right now it's working on the human proteome -- proteins in human DNA. Unraveling these may bear out the clues to solving cancer, AIDS and any number of problems. Other future grid projects will be tsunami prediction, crop yield studies (for hunger stricken countries), etc. Please join. It doesn't interfere with anything on your system and is maintained by IBM, so it is very secure. I work on a wireless computer and it doesn't even slow that down.

Perhaps you could choose a distrubuted computing program which is open source and runs on many OSes.
Thanks for asking! It's coming! We're working on it. We love Mac guys too. I think it's slated to be out this fall.
Thanks..
Lynne

Also these systems are a very similar concept to the 'zombie botnets' that send spam emails from hijacked computers, only you are inviting them to do so.
Some people might use their grids for bad purposes (just like a person might use anything -- their car -- for bad or for good).
This grid is all above board, I can assure you. I'm on the IBM team that works with it and we're getting ready to wrap up the Human Proteome research and start cancer research. Nothing worrisome there....except the cancer itself.
Check out www.worldcommunitygrid.org for more details.
Thanks...
