  • I gave blood for the first time last year, and it's really nothing to worry about. They prick your finger for a blood test, which doesn't really hurt. When they put the needle into your arm, it just feels like a scratch. It then only takes about ten minutes.

  • I'm sure it is but I flinch at the thought of the finger prick but I will do it, I know I should and have been saying I will for years :)

I guess it will just help to know other people are going through with the same thing lol
  • I really duno if giving blood is sore or not coz im a big girl and passed out last time i tried...they took me off the register and basically sed...dont come back :P

i got the prick thing which didnt reli hurt at all and then just kinda fainted in the waiting room for no reason...i didnt even feel overly nervous... :S strange

  • I had an operation a while ago & haven't bothered gettin back on the lists, especially since my mum can't donate any more (thyroxine problems) i should really do my bit.

  • I gave blood for the first time earlier this year, and could do with encouragement to get round to going again!

The finger prick isn't too bad, nor is the process itself - I stared out the window most of the time, which helped. The staff were really lovely and fed me lots of biscuits and drinks afterwards, and giving blood's a great excuse to get sympathy and respect from your friends and colleagues!

All in all, I think the hardest bit was answering the zillion questions and actually being allowed to give blood in the first place - good luck :)

  • I'm another fainter I'm afraid - the first time i donnated I was fine, the two times after that i couldn't complete my donation. Round here i get the impression it's three strikes and your out - although they did say i would be fine after i had kids.

  • I always gave blood until I lived abroad and contracted malaria. Previously this meant I could no longer give, but I have recently been informed that this is no longer the case. Now I just need the push to start giving again.

Hopefully this pledge will do that.

  • I signed up to be a blood donor as soon as I could, but then work got in the way of making the sessions to donate. The company I work for now allows the blood mobile to come onsite to take donations, it's here a couple of times a year and people are encouraged to donate. In the 4 years that I have worked for this company, only missed a session once.

It's amazing the difference encouragement makes. I'm signing the pledge to make sure that I attend a session before the end of the year.

Remember, you never know when it's you or a loved one that will be on the receiving end of a blood donation.

  • Thank you all for signing the pledge and agreeing to do what really is a a worthwhile cause.

I WILL stick to my pledge and will go to give blood as soon as possible and hope you all do the same.

It would be great if you could tell everyone about your experience of giving blood here, let everyone know it really isn't (hopefully) as bad as everyone makes out, to encourage more people to do it.

    Thanks again.
  • CONGRATULATIONS BABE!!!

I would just like to say that I think you've been really brave agreeing to do this! To show my support I have signed up too! When I was pregnant with our daughter Oceana(4 years ago now) I was at a check-up having my blood taken, and it was taking ages because they couldn't find the vein in my arm. I was in quite a lot of discomfort because they had to keep re-doing it, and right in the middle of it all, my devoted Husband Ryan passed out and got all the attention from the midwives! PAY BACK TIME I THINK! You'll be fine babes - we'll paint the town red together (literally) lol! Love you lots - Sammy xxx

  • Have just made an appointment to give blood on 8 August...
  • Well I did it...last Friday (24th June).
Nothing to it really, the worst part was hanging around before they let me go (I am pretty impatient). The staff could not have been more helpful and the entire procedure was made as comfortable as possible. It was no worse than having an injection. My arm has come up in a bruise since but there is no pain. I will definitely be donating again. Thanks to the originator of the Pledge for motivating me.

  • Have given blood before, just been a lazy beggar and not done it for a while. Will find nearest venue now and do it ASAP!

  • Disaster! Finally went and signed up for blood donation and my veins are too small! They wouldn't touch me.

    Ah well...at least I tried.

    Good luck to everyone else!

  • Gave blood yesterday -- relatively painless and yummy biscuits afterwards!
  • I popped along last Thursday (18/08/05) with my Father (giver of over 62 pints!), and it was great. It's not that painful, all over in ten minutes, and they do make extremely good tea.

Thanks Ryan, for getting me moving on giving blood again.
