Pledge “folkonBBCradio”

"I will start a campaign to increase the output of traditional British music on the BBC but only if 10 other people in the UK will join me."

— Christian Mayne

Deadline to sign up by: 30th September 2005

Country: United Kingdom

More details
BBC Radio Cambridgeshire - my local BBC radio station - has no British / English traditional music content. Moreover, the only traditional music output via the BBC to Cambridgeshire is a small slice of Mike Harding's 1 hour long "Folk & Acoustic" show tucked away on Wednesday evenings on Radio 2, or the occasional track on Late Junction on Radio 3.

I feel that proactively representing and promoting the traditional music of Great Britain (amongst other styles) is precisely the role of our national broadcaster, and I pledge to start a campaign to lobby the BBC for an increased output of British traditional music - as long as ten other people will join me

  • There's no excuse for Auntie not to seriously consider requests such as this in the new digital broadcasting landscape with its expanded capabilities.

Licence payers are THE most important stakeholders in our Public Service Broadcaster.
  • This is exactly the sort of broadcasting the BBC should be involved in, as a non-commercial national broadcasting organisation. There could be more on national radio, and the absence of folk music and information about local folk events on local radio is quite inexcusable.
  • amusingly folk gets a mention in the radio 2 programme plans - presumably they will be weaving it in around maria carey - but not in any of the other radio stations

  • Is this Christian Mayne of FatPoppaDaddys fame?

  • How about Celebrity Morris Dancing? But seriously, the Beeb need to do more for our own music.
  • People like Jame Raynard who was really rather good a this year's Cambridge Folk really should get more airtime especially for maintaining the fine traditions of commenting on cuckolds.

  • The BBC has two to three hours per week of jazz on national radio (Jazz Record Requests etc. on Radio 4) each week, but it seems to have very little time for folk music of the UK or its offspring, traditional folk music of the US...

I would love to hear more folk music and folk music discussion on the national radio; it is, after all, part of the country's heritage, history, literature and all those other things likely to impress the BBC...
