"I will organise a meeting on 'Changing global politics to respond effectively to natural disasters' but only if 20 other local people will come along."

More details
People in Malawi are starving to death while the world largely ignores their plight. See http://friendsinmalawi.blogspot.com/

Should responding to natural disasters be left to the whim of politicians and the media deciding what should be made a priority? Why are some disasters forgotten, but others inundated with donations? Why and how are aid contributions being used as a political tool? Should countries be held to their commitment to provide 0.7% of GDP to development and a fund set up which can be used to respond to natural disasters when the need arises? We can send money ourselves, but is there something more we can do?

  • Who might you organise as a speaker for this event? I'm more likely to come along if they sound like they'll have special knowledge, and give me interesting new information.
  • I hope we could have someone from Oxfam explaining about their campaign and someone from Malawi, WDM or Cambridge University who can explain about the food shortage and the role of the forced privatization of the agriculture development organisation in exacerbating this. Plus an explanation of how to encourage MPs to support the Oxfam initiative and the Simultaneous Policy campaign. With a sale of stuff to help raise funds for the aid effort.
