My main worry about ID cards is that it will enable the government to do the same sort of "profiling" of people that marketing groups have been doing for decades now. Essentially it could amount to a legalised form of discrimination, against "persons that fit profile X", but since this won't correspond to a race or faith or age-group, it will be very very hard to identify where it is occuring and to prove that discrimination is also taking place. The fact it is based on "real data" also means that the government can use the pseudo-science of correlation studies to justify their actions.
