More details
Stag beetle are endangered at the moment in the UK. There is currently a project on at the moment to create artificial breeding sites for them around the UK by burying plastic buckets filled with dead wood. For details see http://www.speciesdata.co.uk/cgi-bin/sta...

The actual bucket etc should not cost more than a few pounds and the burying should not take more than a few minutes.

  • Whereabouts would I put my bucket? I live in a rented town house, so don't have my own land to put it on. Are there other good places?
  • How about a window box? You could plant a small bucket, of the style used for sandcastles. Or would that be too small?

  • Well, I'm also in a basement room. But there is a very small cemented yard, so if a window box worked it could go there. Ed?
  • I fear that the buckets really need to go into the groud proper so that passing stag beetles will find them. Also the buckets should remain undisturbed for a few years. Perhaps there is a bit of common land near you - although that may count as littering. It all helps I suppose.
  • Hi,
Rather late - but I'm burying the bucket this pm.
