More details
Hackdays bring people together for a day of building things. You start by learning more about relevant data and tools, and then form into groups of people who are interested in building the same things. It's surprising to see what you can build together in a day.

Often, the cobbled-together prototype proves a fantastic idea you can build into a functional website later. By bringing together people with a common interest, hackdays let you throw ideas around, use stuff you might not have thought of, and solve problems that had been troubling you for ages.

"VegHack" would be about helping people to live without hurting animals. We might use events data from vegan groups, data.gov.uk information about the use and abuse of other animals, or the databases set up by campaigning groups like VPSG or HorseDeathWatch.com.

This could be really useful networking event to encourage organisations to release and combine information in new and interesting ways.

("Hack" in this context means building things quickly. It is not used in the "unauthorised access" sense of the word. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hack_Day)

  • People tell me they are not sure what they would make at a hackday. Part of the joy is combining skills and ideas on the day, but here are some things we could build:

    * a Java calculator of how many animals someone might save from life on the factory farm by going vegan

    * levels of animal protection legislation by country, mapped

    * events calendars from different organisations displayed side by side

    Please add ideas in comments.
  • I need help making improvements to my websites (on Drupal). GiveFriendly.com is the website of the Animal-Friendly Giving Guide, a project to help animal-friendly nonprofit organizations and potential donors find each other and inform people about how some organizations harm animals. Veg-a-thon.com explains why and how to eat vegan as a fundraiser. I am in the United States, but these websites are international in scope. Please see my website for descriptions of some things I want to do with them. Thank you.
  • A get-together for vegan web developers will happen at Vantra in central London at 7pm on December the 1st. They've got wifi and plenty of room, so it's a good place to bring laptops and compare notes.

This will be a great chance to meet other people running vegan websites and see how we could help each other. Please tell anyone who might be interested (not least because I've used my one email to signers!)
