More details
Bwindi Orphans’ Primary School & Nursery in North West Uganda provides education for the children of the Batwa Pygmies and Orphans of the region.
These children attend free of charge and their fees are covered by paying pupils.
All the children of the area desperately want education and their choir sings out:

“Please give us education, we are tired of tending goats”

James Musinguzi the Headmaster of Bwindi Orphans’ school is delighted that our latrine appeal of 2005 raised £1000, which built full toilet facilities for the 240 pupil school, who previously had been deprived of adequate facilities. The newly built latrines saved the school from closure.
In 2006 James hopes to raise £6000 to built three brick classrooms and a dormitory for children who travel long distances to school, to stay overnight.

I visit the school every year and the work they do is trully wonderful!

  • It sounds like an excellent cause, but can you offer any proof that the money we send is going to a charity? (Sorry to be suspicious)

  • Dear Hannah
Of course I understand that one should always be careful. I have been personally involved with the school since March 2004 and have been fundraising ever since. I can confirm that With all the donations I have provided, to date, the payments have gone into the Bwindi Orphans’ School Stanbic bank account and the Headmaster has provided a receipt. But best of all, my visits (last one March 2005, next one March 2006) have and continue to allow me to meet all the teachers and children we are sponsoring and see the latrines we have already built, so I get to see for myself how the money is being spent! So despite this project not (yet) being a registered charity in the UK, I personally see the money at work and none of the donations have been used for expenses but all have gone directly to the school’s account. I will also be in a position to verify that any money raised by pledge bank does reach the school and does get put to wonderful use.
So thank you so much for considering joining the pledge and if you would first like to receive a copy of the newsletter (I sent to previous supporters), photographs of the completed latrine and copies of letters from some of the teachers and students, please do not hesitate to send a large SAE for me to send you more information

Thank you for your very understandable question.
    Best wishes

  • It is wonderful news that the initial pledge of ten people has already been met. I hope that people will continue to support this pledge until it closes on 30th June. As I hope we can raise as much as possible towards the total amount of £6000 required to complete the project. I am delighted that I have already sent out £1000 so only £5000 to go.....PLEASE help. Thank you Joy

  • Having just returned from a further trip to the school. I have now added a photograph of the build in progress, with the existing classroom in the background. We now only have £3400 to raise to complete the 3 classroom block!

  • Dear Joy,
do you work together with Headmaster James directly or are there other people involved? If yes, I would be interested to get to know who.
I know the school and Buhoma very well. By the way Bwindi is in South-West-Uganda not in the North-West as it is written in the promise.
I have seen the beginning of building the new class-rooms.
    I wish you much success!

  • Thanks for the message about South west, sadly I realised the mistake
after I had launched the pledge and once set up, you cannot change the wording of the actual pledge!
I work directly with James the headmaster at the school and have met with ALL the school board, including the treasurer. The payments I make go directly into the school bank
account. James is very efficient and sends me receipts for all payments made.
I can send anyone a written report of my last trip and if anyone would like more information including photos on CD they can let me have a postal address and I will gladly send out more information.

Some sponsors have yet to send in their donations, so if this includes you, plesae contact me to let me know if you are still happy to donate.
