• For all of my life I've been trying to find a way of life. Sephyism has got to be the greatest jump for all of us!

• This has got to be one of the most pointless things I've ever heard of. You can't worship a COMPUTER GAME CHARACTER as a religion.. I like a few characters, but I've the brains to realize that there's no possible way you can make them real; especially through religion.

• Listen Ivan, people have right to believe what they believe in. I happen to be one of the Sephyists. Be a little more open minded, then maybe you can see that (Not my quote.)"Religions are fantasies created by man to relax their minds and reassure themselves that there's something worthwhile, some kind of heavenly reward that follows the corrupt world they must live through."
  
  I just happen to love Sephyism, because it's the first religion that is actually stepping ahead to expand and let other people join and express their feelings.
  
  It is also a good way to say that we don't need to be forced down to a certain religion, we are free to choose what we wish.

• So people aren't allowed not to choose a religion, by your own words? Then I must be breaking an unwritten rule. I'm not against those who have religions that don't worship game characters, but worshipping a game character as a religion is the proverbial "stepping over one's boundaries".
  
  I suggest taking up a hobby. Knitting would be good for "Sephyists".

• Is it just me or does it seem silly to worship a creation of the gamer-nerds of Squaresoft? Sorry, but Sephiroth is a handful of pixels found in one of the many games of the Final Fantasy monopoly, and not even the best one. He doesn't do it for me. He kind of just stands there on the screen looking dramatic and emo--not much of a talker.

• I'm happy to sign. Even through I'm not fond of the idea of religion. I can understand the need to belive in something but so many organised religions don't make sense to me. Alot of what Sephtism stands for dose. Its no worse than The Jedi becoming a reconised religion. Which it did in the UK a few years back. So why not this religion.

• In most if not all religions the worshipers gain some sort of benefit from the worshipped, otherwise why do the worshipping? Here's a couple questions: 1) what does Sephiroth do to benefit you, and 2) how does one go about worshipping Sephiroth? Responses will both satisfy my curiosity and tell me that people actually read the comment board.

• For me, Sephiroth represents someone who came back from the dead stronger. This I can indentify with personally as I have been medically dead twice and have come back on both occasions. I see this as a reason not to hate the fact I did die but to embrace the two lucky breaks I got. He also represents for me strength and a intelligent pesron (manily before he became insane/evil). He was seen as a hero. No one can be seen as a hero unless they have done something that entitles them to that title. So for me this is more of a symbolisim thing rather than worshiping one cgi character. Yes, I am aware that he is a fictional character. But I believe that humans have the right to believe in whatever they choose as long as it dosen't effect others. Which is why I'm not fond of other organised religion. Most will at some point in their histroy had a war fought in their cause. I except that conflict is a part of human nature but to involve so many people on a massive scale is wrong. I know that Sephiroth set about trying to destroy the planet in the process of his assent to godhood. I isn't directly (except those who try and stop him) attacking or involving people in his cause. I personally prefer him prior to the Niblehelm event anyway.
  
  My form of worship is to embrace life after coming back and make better use of it. Also to gain a sense of clarity with my own strength.
  
  In answer to your statement about spelling/grammer. Please be aware that about 25/30% of the worlds population suffer from some form of learning difficulty (I for one have dyslexia). Although we try our best mistakes can be made. To us, that comment would be considered offencesive.

• In that case it is a matter of symbolism; there's a difference between symbolism, reverence, and worship. I can see and understand using Sephiroth as a symbol and identifying with him and maybe pushing it to the point of reverence, but it boggles my mind to think of worshipping man-made pixels--I don't comprehend the -why- when in the majority of worshipper/worshipped there is some sort of benefit.
  
  My statement about spelling was not intended to be insulting, it's just that I've been in a lot of forums where people just choose not to use a simple spell-checker. Because of that it's become a pet peeve, furthered by the fact that most of said people flame others and launch into more petty things.

• Dude, thats insane. first of all, Sephiroth was a Game character created in like 1995, for a game. He doesn't live, you can't argue that he's real except for in a video game. Second, Him and Jenova were the Antagonists. They were the bad guys. Are you stupid? So are you going to run around with a 6 foot long sword stabbing the president? Now that would be great to see. • To logos. I do understand you iritation with bad spellers. Sometimes, even the laziness dose show. It makes people, like me who have a genuine spelling problem look bad. So I can agree with your pet preeve.
  
  I don't so much worship Sephiroth as indentify. Yes, I know hes evil but most people are not 100% good. His evil nature dose come as a result of being tested on and I can see why he would go insane and want to destroy the world. I indentify with his rebirth as I have had a similar experience. I indentify with his swordmanship as I'm a sword fighter of excellent standing who went on to train others. I also indentify with his non-gender looks as that is how I do look (yes, i do have the same colour hair except a bit whiter).
  
  Yes he is created character. Some can argue that other religious icons are. How can you prove that such people were real. You can't, the believe alone is strong enough.
  
  I, personally, am curious to see how many people could believe and support this. I for one don't like religon but I can support if others believe in it strongly enough.

  Organised Religion has people mindlessly following a God to be feared and who is manipulative : love me or go to hell, do this for me or go to hell, dont do that and go to hell.
  
  Sephyism, like Jediism, allows people an alternative religion. We know Sephiroth never was and never will be real. But are all of you who are insulting our intelligences saying the same things to the followers of the Jedi religion or the people who learn Klingon?
  
  Can you prove Jesus was real? or Buddah? or any of the other gods that are floating around here today?
  
  The fact is that we chose to follow Sephyism because none of the other religions fitted with us. I was born a Catholic and became an Atheist when i was 6. I was a person who had to have everything proved to me.
  
  To me, Sephyism is one of the few religions without rules. We dont have to fear being sent to hell just because of some outdated sin such as homosexuality. We dont have to go to a place of worship every week and be told that we're all sinners and going to hell!

Do you really think if they take this petition to the whitehouse (assuming they even make it to the fence) and explain this to the president that he'd going to nod his head and put a super-dee-duper stamp of approval on it? Heck, if they made this public, the whole world would be laughing at them, and you know it, no matter how much "Sephiroth has influenced your life". To deny that is just plain oblivious.

  Racism: When every religion is wrong and you think that ONLY YOUR religion is right. You don't accept anything else.
  
  Ethnocentrism: When every religion is accepted naturally. You are more of an open minded person. You also keep in mind that people are different.

  We KNOW this is unlikely to become an official religion; do you think we would have set the bar at 50000 sigs if we thought it would succeed? There's only a few members on the Sephyism forunms on ACF and they thought it would be a fun idea; a kind of experiment if you will; to see
  
  a) if people would accept the idea
  b) how other people would take the idea
  c) could we succeed (probably not)
  
  Noones mocking other peoples spirituality. We're all simply people who gave up on organised religion a long time ago because it simply wasnt for us.

• Sephyism would BE organized religion if this (due to some miracle) became official. And like any "cult" as it seems to be, things would get more extreme as it went along. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if an extremist group started killing people.
  
  As I said, you don't see the whole picture. If all you can say about religion is that it's a tight-ass organization for homophobes, then you haven't done YOUR research.
  
  I feel the need to mention that Buddha IS real. No, he's not a god, he's a historical figure, who was highly admired and "worshipped" for his knowledge and teachings, which far surpass anything Sephiroth is going to teach you. Most of the "symbolism" and "lessons" I've heard for this religion are things encouraged in other religions and even atheism anyway. Honestly, if you want freedom and the opportunity to get to know yourself and become a better person, look up Buddhism.
  
  On the other hand, no, we can't prove Jesus is real, or God, or any of the people mentioned in the bible, Torah, or Qur'an, because it's all about faith. There's no faith great enough to suddenly make Sephiroth a real, multi-dimensional person, who you can look up to and write a bible about. He has no teachings. He provides no light at the end of the tunnel. If there ever was anything written to support this, it'd probably be fabricated because of some millisecond in the game where people had the delusion that it implied it. You say you need real proof that something exists and is worthy of worship, worthy of putting your whole heart and soul into. Where the fuck is that proof? And give me a scholarly answer, because none of the shit I've read above is proving anything.
  
  Then again, I don't think anything you could ever say will prove that you're an intellegent being if you're holding a character created for a game as highly as God.

  if i was stupid would i be about to undertake a University Honours course in Mathematical Science and Computer Engineering, something which required 4 A's at the higher lever to qualify for?
  If i was stupid, would i have been doing work aimed at 13 year olds when i was just 10?
  And if i was stupid, would i be one of less than 0.5% of UK secondary school pupils who attained 90% on an advanced maths challenge, when i was 14?
  
  And despite saying i follow sephyism and signing the pledge, i still dont believe in god.
  I never have done and i never will. If there was a god, then why is there so much suffering on our planet? wouldnt this lord almighty who loves us so much save those poor kids getting raped by their parents? help those third world countries who cant even grow food they're that poor?
  If God loves us all, then why is he making life so goddam difficult for us? I have relatives that went to church everyday all their lives dying of cancer whilst drug dealers and rapists are living the high life. Where's God then?

• I also take offence at the suggestion that we're all going to become extremist killers. I'd like to point out that many of us are just teenagers who happen to have taken an alternative approach to our fandom. This is for fans of Sephiroth, by fans of Sephiroth.
  If you dont wanna join, fine by me. Im not gonna force you. I dont force my friends to like the same things as me so why force some stranger into joining a made up religion that was just a bit of a laugh?
  And anyway, if you had paid attention; getting all these signatures will not make this an official religion. It is a pledge to attempt to make this an official religion if we get 50000 signatures.

  You could make a religion about ANYBODY for their good traits. • There are fair points being raised on both sides but do we need to resort to insults. This is were organised religion has gone wrong. Not by the belive system that each one has but by the people who feel the need to insult others for having free thought/belifs in alternative things. I don't think any one religious icon is prefect. If they were then the world would match. We, as humans, feel the need to focus our belives on something. It helps us though our lives and gives us goals. It shouldn't matter what/where it is that we choose to place our faith.
  
  Holy wars have happened because people didn't like what others choice to worship. By insulting each other you are merely echoing that thought pattern. This can then extend to a war. Do you really want that? I don't insult anyone who chooses to worship organised religion. I feel that people can be free to choose who they worship. If I choose to worship a game character or the Easter bunny that should be my choice and that of others without fear of insult.
  
  I choose to support Sephyism. Not becasue I belive in the possiblity of the religion myself more so that it can allow others to choose.
  
  Freedom of choice is important to me. Though my years I have found that to be important not the end result. I'm in my 30's btw. Intellegence dosen't have to messured by qualifications (it can help). Afterall, I have a 182 IQ and still can't spell for shit.

  This isn't a real legitimate religion worth respect, it's a fandom taken far out of control and hopefully in a few years, you'll all look back and laugh at how seriously you took it. You /should/ have fear of insult, because trying to make the worship of a game character as recognized as Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Shintoism, Hinduism etc, is an insult to the people of those religions' faith, which as I said, is much deeper than fangirlism.   Also, Sephiroth is overrated. I'm sorry, but it's true. He's awesome and all, but when you have him dominating popularity contests in Gamefaqs and someone trying to start a religion about him, that awesomeness goes down big-time. Just another wonderfully complex character I hate because of the fanbase. And I'm the one that tends to defend the hated characters from the popular bashing.
  
  Yes, I'm aware one could argue God is overrated. Heck, I'm willing to actually believe that when people are doing stupid things in His name. And I'm a freaking Catholic. Yes, I'm willing to take the crap someone's going to give me for being one, because I realize the vast flaws in my religion.

  I'm not getting the concept of worshiping a clearly fictional and man-made character, nor do I see anyone explain the tenets of the religion in the 50+ comments here or in the LiveJournal linked in the OP. Does it have tenets? What is it that you believe, besides worshiping Sephiroth? How do you do so? Why? Note that I am not asking for the rehashed versions of the posts above, but an original, well-thought-out explanation.
  
  I hope to see a decent post explaining this. It may help your cause if there were a comprehensive post describing what this "Sephyism" is. Otherwise, it seems to be a very vague, nebulous concept of worshiping a character created by Squaresoft, Inc. for the video game Final Fantasy VII. It would make about the same amount of sense to worship Sonic the Hedgehog to me without an explanation.
  
  I'm not even touching on the fact that Sephiroth has an insane streak a mile wide and a penchant for destruction. I like the character well enough, but his fans are sometimes nuttier than he is.

  I'm a huge fan of Final Fantasy, Sephiroth is awesome, but even a diehard fan can see that this is absolutley ridiculous. The only reason you basement dwellers probably worship him is because you think he's "HAWT" or you love to see him in yaoi so you can fap to him.

  I still think this is the most ridiculous thing in the world, but no longer because it's an insult to real religious organization. It's not an insult. It's the same exact bullshit.
  
  Do you need a religion? If Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hindu, Buddhism etc don't do the trick for you, why can't you just live an interesting life and be a good person as best as you know how? Why guidelines? Why a source to worship? Why anything? Become an atheist. It's not that big a deal.

  Sephiroth represents the idea of a cycle of destruction and creation... Purification by flames. As volcanoes : they burn all crops, but the volcanic soil is more fertil than others. As the Phenix : eternal symbol of death and rebirth.
  
  In middle age Alchemy, the first step was the "Nigredo", the purification step. Nigredo was called "Niger Nigrius Nigro" : the "Black blacker then Black"
  
  It is a way to think... but it doesn't mean you have to worship pixels as a god.

• Why do people get so worked up about this? If people want to worship a video game character then let them! Its unlikely their 'worship' will lead to any harm on themselves or others so whats the problem? I'm interested to know if the ideas behind this 'religion' are drawn from the (i think its called) 'from fiction' theory, whereas people believe that authors, video game creaters and such like have actually tapped in to some alternative reality their ideas not being bourne out of imagination but instead being channeled unconsciously from some other place....

• To me, Sephyism makes more sense than most major religions around today. I have openly been a follower of Sephyism for years, and was a part of (what I believe to be) it's conception of Advent Children Forums. (Either that or coincidence.)
