However a public option is not an option because it would create unfair competition. See insurance companies have to try to keep their costs low, and provide the best value for the buck since they need to make a profit in order to continue to exist. The government who can and does (Medicare, Medicaid) provide a service without having to make a profit. Therefore they would be able to provide similar services at a far lesser cost since they have little concern for profit. We need to open up the free market, not more government regulation to lower healthcare costs. We need tort reform to slow the onslaught of multi-million dollar law suits. Common Sense. Whether Republican or Democrat everybody is agreed that something needed to be done about US healthcare - it wasn't working; not even for the insurance companies. Sometimes the world needs to change; even countries like the USA need to move forward. The NHS isn't perfect but it's a whole lot better than the alternatives!
