  • Just listening to LBC this evening while in the office (work'a'holic) and thought 'what an excellent thought'. It was sad to see such a landmark to go up in flames and I live in Ealing where many of my 'friends' live and work.
    I hope that the 1000 signatures come-in
  • I had tears in my eyes when I heard about this, I suspect my Great great grandfather shopped in this shop, so many years ago...lets help re-build it for another 150 years....Oh yea, I heard about it on LBC to. wonderful idea...come on guys we can do this.....

  • Sadly I watched this shop on screen via the BBC and meanwhile watched the smoke and helicopter filming from my window just a couple of streets away... A very, very sad event and loss... Mindless... I hope that the Reeves family is ultimately able to re-build their store and business... Along with all those who have been affected by this situation.

  • I live in Hampshire & nowhere near Croydon although I've been through there a few times in the past.

But I am DAMNED if I am going to allow a bunch of thugs destroy forever something that has survived 140 years, two world wars and a depression.

It's a symbol that demonstrates what can be achieved in a free society by working hard and it must be rebuilt.

I have also had my faith in humanity restored by all the kindness and help that has appeared since. The RiotCleanup on Twitter is amazing. It shows that people do really care. Well done Mark, you're one of the many many great people in other socieity.
  • I have walked past this building nearly every day for the past eleven years and have been a customer. I watched the flames and smoke from my lounge window! So devastating for the whole community. My heart goes out to the Reeves family. This pledge is a wonderful idea. Thank you Mark.

  • I am finding it very difficult to come to terms with this horrific & mindless happening. If I feel upset, I just can't imagine what the Reeves family are living through. Reeves Corner features in my earlier life & we still have a very fine piece of furniture from the auction rooms:- early 1960's. I new Jean Reeves & I think her cousin who went to work for Stockwell & Oxfords in Croydon. We were at Clarkes. My wife,Sylvia & I send our condolences & heart felt Best Wishes to the Reeves family. • This is all soooo sad!!!! & as an ex- pat Brit feel that I have to contribute in some small way to bring something positive to this dreadful & senseless event that has harmed so many good people!
Croydon was my own, & some of my family's birthplace.~~Maurice & I were class mates in junior school ("Ladymount")in Beddington~Until the war disrupted all our lives~~~Well we were all able to survive the Blitz~ That's what we call "Good old British Grit" & we all call upon that to get us through!!~Wishing you Maurice, & all your dear ones, & your staff, all the very best for your swift recovery.
  • I don't live in or know Croydon, but I watched this store blaze throughout the news coverage and feel that we must all stand together to show that the mindless, moronic activity of the few must be met by the goodwill of the majority of us who simply want to live in peace and go about our daily business without fear.

  • I sat with my husband and watched this building being brought to the ground by fire. I feel ashamed to belong to this country at the moment as I have watched children rioting in our streets. I have been told that I am to strict with my children by people. But at least I know where my son was during this because I had him home with me and I have set him a curfew of 5pm daily. and his 17 years old he accepts this with out arguement prehaps other parents should do the same

  • I've been a Croydonian all my life, and the Reeves store was definately a landmark.

Let's not forgot the employees of this place - it's not only the rebuilding of the premises that's important. This pledge money should help the employees in the meantime so they're not forced into benefits and poverty.

I doubt the business has money put aside to help pay them if it's not trading, and insurance definately won't cover that.

Trish Sawyer, 6 years ago. Abusive? Report it!
  • I sympathise with your plight. But really, this is a commercial enterprise. Why should you appeal for public contributions? There are far more deserving causes for charity throughout Britain and the world which would do far more good for people's basic needs than making the commercial endeavours of a furniture store easier.
  • Matt. You are entitled to your opinion of course. I have set out the reasoning that led me to start this pledge in a blogpost yesterday here:

    http://markreckons.blogspot.com/2011/08/...

I don't expect it will change your mind but the purpose of the pledge is quite clear and you don't have to pledge if you don't think it's a worthy cause.

There are already all sorts of campaigns for other businesses and people launching and running and good luck to all of them. There are loads of people affected by these riots and I hope all of them get all the help they need. Indeed I intend to contribute to some of them myself and I suspect others who have pledged here will do so too. They do not have to be mutually exclusive.

  • I was very sad to see this iconic landmark building raised to the ground and will be happy to pledge money to rebuild it. Hoever, I do think that the employees should be considered too - 15 people lost their jobs the night the building burned down and, as some of them were living above the shop, lost their homes as well - so let's have also have a fund for them.

  • I'm wondering why their insurance won't cover their losses.
Pat Tanner, 6 years ago. Abusive? Report it!
  • An event like this is quite devastating for a business. There is no way that insurance will cover all the losses. There is all the interruption to cash flow, loss of profit, compensation to customers while still having to pay wages and interest on any overdraft or bank loans. Some funds now will be really useful to this company
