The European Union Emissions Trading Scheme allows business to buy and sell carbon emissions, those which produce under their allocation sell to those who can't! As you can imagine the "evil" companies just buy credits from "good" companies. If the UK fails to meet its targets the industries get fined for the over production of carbon. Now www.ebico.co.uk allows you to buy these carbon credits for your use. It costs about £20 on average, and that buys your own personal carbon footprint offset. Since the credits are purchased and then "retired" it means that the "evil" companies have less of a market to buy and so, supply and demand means that they pay more! hopefully forcing them to think a little more about climate change.
