More details
Microfinance makes very small loans to very small businesses in very poor countries. The business survives, the family eats, the kids go to school; and the economic spiral goes up rather than down. kiva.org lets people make micro-loans via Paypal to businesses and individuals you choose from their lists. AND it is not a gift - 99.8% are repaid so far. So you can withdraw your "investment," or re-loan again.
