This cause is to raise funds for Israel Garcia who died in Wanat Afghanistan four days before coming home and received the Silver Star for his actions that day. His deployment was rough, so much so it had a documentary made about it "Restrepo", which won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the 2010 Sundance film festival. He went to a Long Beach high school named Polytechnic and graduated with the class of 2002, the year he also met the love of his life, Lesly. The school, city, as well as the Long Beach school district originally denied the placement of a memorial, but hesitantly reconsidered after some negotiations. The memorial must be entirely independently funded. Sgt. Garcia's widow and family chose a bench with a plaque honoring his memory, but it is an expensive endeavor, costing approximately $4,500, which the family will not be able to provide without help. Upon doing research a social fundraising platform is a great match for this help, and any and all extra funds will go on to other soldier's memorials or a scholarship in his name. Please help, this is the longest war in our nation's history and yet there are no memorials other than the "Killed In Action" bracelets.
