Pledge “First1000”

"I will move to New Hampshire by 12/31/2008 where I will work to bring about a society in which government’s maximum role is protecting life, liberty, and property but only if 999 other liberty minded individuals will do the same."

— Ian Bernard, Free State Project participant

Deadline to sign up by: 31st December 2006
1,027 people signed up (28 over target)

Country: United States

More details
I am a participant in the Free State Project, www.freestateproject.org, which has the goal of getting 20,000 people to agree to move to New Hampshire where they will work to bring about a society in which government’s maximum role is protecting life, liberty, and property. However, I don’t want to wait for 20,000 to agree to move before relocating. I want to move now. I am calling on liberty lovers everywhere to move with me, to be a pioneer for freedom, to be a beacon of liberty in the Free State. Together we can bring about a state with increased liberties and reduced government. Join me!

All current FSP participants are urged to pledge to an early move. And those who have already moved (since 10/1/03) are also eligible for inclusion. For non-participants, signing the FSP’s SOI is not required, though we encourage it should you desire to do so. Of greater import, is creating the Free State we know *can* exist by gathering together and being activists for freedom.

New Hampshire was already one of the top states closest to the goal of liberty at the time of the state vote in 2003. At that time the participants chose New Hampshire among all of the ten candidate states to be the center of freedom in the United States. The state motto “Live Free or Die” personifies Granite State residents, who have an innate distrust of government and a lack of tolerance for it stepping out of bounds. The governorship is the weakest of all states due to constitutionally mandated checks and balances. The House of Representatives has 400 members which for this small state allows for perhaps the best representation in the country. State reps are motivated by a desire to serve the people as evidenced by the fact that their compensation is $100 year! Not professional politicians but rather concerned citizens are serving! For more information on New Hampshire visit the FSP NH Info webpages.

Already, early movers are having an impact towards a free society. Several early movers have run for office and some have won! Other early movers have been appointed to offices on school, budget, and planning committees/boards. The New Hampshire Liberty Alliance (http://nhliberty.org), founded by FSP participants, produces an annual report card on our Representatives (http://nhliberty.org/2005ReportCard) as well as closely screens all new proposed legislation. Another early mover founded a scholarship fund (http://www.lsfund.org/) to help families tied to the public school system to use a private school or try homeschooling. Several instances of civil disobedience have been staged to bring to light overbearing state controls (http://www.fosters.com/apps/pbcs.dll/art...). And several public gatherings related to social security card abuse, and eminent domain have been held (http://www.nhfree.com/). A newly relocated Porcupine is now Chair of the New Hampshire Republican Liberty Caucus (http://nh.rlc.org/), another participant is the Democratic Freedom Caucus chair and several LP leaders are also FSP participants. Participants who signed up before the vote but who have always lived in New Hampshire, continue to be active in keeping the government in check!

Come join me in New Hampshire! Let's build a Free State together!

  • This is so cool. I want to move to New Hampshire and join in on all of the fun that those New Hampshire rebels are having.

The truth is, I was not sure I would be able to make it to NH by 2008. However, after learning about all of the great stuff that is going on in NH, I am not sure if I can make it if I am not in NH by 2008 :)
  • This is great. I already live in NH, and I'm not a FSP participant....but I can still sign. Free at last!
  • Come on folks sign up, For Freedom, Liberty and so Varrin can get that big driveway.

  • My wife and I moved to New Hampshire in July 2005. We love it here! The people are friendly, the taxes are low, and the activity of the other early-mover free-staters is infectious. The New Hampshire Liberty Alliance (NHLA) has been doing an amazing job, we're priviledged to be part of the Second American Revolution.
  • 2008 is PERFECT.
Okay Liberty Lovers you got 2 years to get your stuff together!

  • Dear Sir or Madam:
I am writing to tell you that I moved to New Hampshire on 01 November 2004, with my wife and daughter, and have had another child since the move. We live in Newport, Co. Sullivan, New Hampshire, and have gotten a lot of positive feedback from members of the surrounding community to my libertarian party windbreaker and tee-shirts.
  • A thousand committed activists should make quite a splash!

Don't forget to join our group(s) on upcoming:

  • Dearest Porcupines,
As an early participant, I must say how much I thank you all for joining us so we could reach 5000 members and select such a wonderful state for our project! My first visit to New Hampshire was to attend Porcfest 05 and I was very pleased with the "Live Free or Die" state! I decided even before leaving Porcfest 05 that I was going to move as soon as I could get home and pack. Several weeks into preparations I decided that since I was "lightening the load" for the move, I would stay "light" for a year and visit Austin, Texas to help my friend Michael Badnarik with his congressional campaign. As you all know, Michael is a Free State Project Member and he was the 2004 Libertarian Presidential Candidate (on the ballot in 48 states)! Just imagine what it's going to be like with a declared Libertarian elected to congress! Politics will change forever with the "one creature with two heads body politic" slain. Michael's race is "everyperson's" race since he will represent all of us in our efforts and desire to return our "out of control" government back to it's Constitutional Republic roots and We The People! Just as our Founding Fathers pledged their freedom, fortunes, and sacred honor...we have done so also...by joining the FSP...and I am continuing that pledge by helping my friend Michael. Won't you join us today and volunteer, contribute, and endorse Michael in this, most important, election. Please visit our website and keep up to date via our blog! Oh, I almost forgot to add that Michael has written a book, teaches a constitution class, and is also a Liberty Associate with the Liberty Dollar! Learn more at www.constitutionpreservation.org! Thanks again, to all of you, for standing tall in your freedom and for giving everyone else total respect for their liberty! Let's continue to judge all past, current, and future codes, laws, regulations, rules, etc. by their conformity to the "Zero Aggression Principle" AND "The Golden Rule." "When in doubt, throw them out..." That goes double for the corrupt politicians and triple for the judges who subvert the constitution and the people each and every day!

    Live Free Or Die!

  • Andrea, the goal isn't to move at the end of 2008, it's _by_ 2008... If you are moving now, Yes, you can sign it.

  • I see now that I made a slight typo in my comment above... one that makes a pretty significant difference. We're moving within five YEARS (not days). But I can't commit to the two years, because it's unlikely that my husband can finish his training program in that amount of time. But, there's always a chance things will change, and if so, then we'd be happy to sign.

  • I finally got serious about the Free State Project when I gave up on the job market in the rust belt and took a job in Boston but after looking over the situation there, I decided that I did not want to live in Taxachusetts with all their liberal socialists. • Smoke and mirrors is fooling many, but I know the FSP is the most liberty I can hope for. Changing NH drug laws would greatly reduce barriers to people moving. Drug users are being abused and can't talk for them self out of fear. Those who need not fear drug laws should work to change them and highlight low arrest rates for possession. COGNITIVE liberty, or no liberty at all. Let me run my blood-brain barrier.

  • Hello Again Porcupines! I wanted to announce that on May 11th, 2006 I joined the ranks of the Frontline Troops fighting for Liberty and Freedom in the Live Free or Die State! I spent several weeks in a motel with a rental car touring the state and attending as many events as I possibly could. Recently I made the decision to hang my gunleather in Allenstown, a quiet little town about halfway between Concord and Manchester. Just yesterday we had a full day of festivities with the Merrimack Valley Porcupine's Monthly Meeting in Manchester and then moving a fellow Porcupine into his newly constructed home in the Pembroke area. Today Bob Schulz (We The People Foundation - www.givemeliberty.org) held the second of his many nationwide tour stops in Concord at the New Hampshire Technical Institute. Constitutional Attorney Mark Lane was there also and Patriot Pastor Garrett Lear showed up in his awesome colonial outfit! I can't encourage you enough to do whatever it takes to get rid of your old life, whatever and wherever it may have been, and move ASAP to the Free State! We have such an incredible and inspiring group here already with more arriving every few days! You will never regret making the decision to move ASAP and once you are here you will wonder why you waited this long... I know I did! I did want to share the calendar that many of us use to keep all these events and happenings in order. Please visit www.nhlibertycalendar.org to see what you are missing and why we need all the reinforcements we can get.

  • Even more than the corruption, power-lust, and greed of politicians, I blame the people of the United States for the degradation of our freedoms and for the utter disregard paid to our glorious Constitution and Bill of Rights. Politicians are inherently untrustworthy, and turning our backs on them is abdicating both our right and our responsibility to govern ourselves. You wouldn't ask a venemous snake to watch the baby while you go out for the evening, would you?

This movement is exactly what we need, and I for one am thrilled. Americans who actually care about the freedoms vouchsafed to us by the Founding Fathers and who are not willing to let a pit full of vipers watch the baby need very much to band together, stand up, and be heard in a mighty collective voice. I'll be there... will you?
  • I am so excited about this project and I have been taking every opportunity I can for the last couple of years to get as many people as I can involved. It gives me hope to see that there are others like me still left in this country.

As I said in my "I Made the Move" story http://freestateproject.org/community/mo..., there is a level of grassroots political activism here in New Hampshire that I haven't seen since the early 1970's. Free State Project early-movers are already taking active roles in their new communities in so many different ways.

The Free State Project early-movers are like true pioneers, laying the groundwork, clearing the fields, and planting the crops that will support the liberty-loving communities of New Hampshire's future, and I'm proud to be a member of this group!

  • After paying close attention to our political system and our government for about the last 20 years (and I am still pretty young) and having lived out of the United States just to see what it is like under other Western European socialist countries (for example, just check out the website for the Prime Minister of England and his initiative on 'respect'), I only wondered where the heck we freedom loving Americans could go to get away--and far away--from all these socialists. Anybody read Ayn Rand?! Who is John Galt? I actually thought that there would be many Americans ready to leave the country and give up the fight. What would the federal government do if you actually had some intestinal fortitude and told Washington that no more federal taxes are going to be sent for this socialist structure perectages like those in the Communist Manifesto? Do Americans living there really have to resolve to LIVE FREE OR DIE? I Do. Give me liberty or give me death? What happened to that? Just one man's opinion over 200 years ago? Can I be safe there without worry of the Mexican invaders? (Not that I don't like Mexican's, they are very nice people--just no idea of what liberty is). Or do I pull myself out of this society (The USA) for another country that is growing and be a beneficial citizen for that country? Someone help me and please give me a real reason to stay in the United States? I just feel your efforts for living freely will eventually be squashed by the die hard's in the federal government. Tell me where I am wrong and why it is not worth giving up the fight.

    Best regards,

  • An FSP member and First 1000 Pledger, we made our move over May and June of 2006. This excerpt from another letter is probably the most informative of our happiness at making 'the move'.

As I walked my 6 year old son down our dirt road to the bus stop, he talked about the beauty of the woods, kicking the leaves and picking up a stick to be his toy sword on the walk. This is his first New Hampshire Autumn, and I was reminded, through his eyes, of the beauty of the State we now call home.

His mother and I grew up in New England. Career and commerce brought us to Ohio 6 weeks after our youngest son's birth. As I started my own company in 2005, gaining the geographic freedom that brought, we decided to relocate to New Hampshire. Family, friends, and 'live free or die' contributed to the choice. With some hesitation, I signed the Free State Project and First 1000 Pledge. I have never been much of a joiner.

Residents of the state since May of 2006, we love our land, our schools and the interest our neighbors take in maintaining liberty. I hope many other independent and freedom-minded people will join us as citizens.

I had the pleasure of managing the successful Joel Winters campaign for state representative, and now I'm involving myself in several other projects to advance the cause of liberty. I can live, basically, in any of the environments in NH, but Boston is definitely NOT a draw for me. A hermit's cabin in the woods will be great. A little land might be nice. Hiking trails absolutely necessary. (AT a plus!). Thanks and hope to see you all soon. HOW WILL I KNOW YOU WHEN I GET THERE?

  • All of you who have pledged here to move to NH as a part of the FSP - please also JOIN THE FSP! They are separate sign-ups. Pledging here as a part of the First 1000 does not automatically sign you up for the FSP and vice versa...

Thank you! See you in New Hampshire.

  • Three signatures were recently removed, as they were duplicates of older signatures that we were alerted about by the Free State Project. Sorry if that upset anyone so close to the goal, but hope you can understand, and it looks like the pledge might meet its target as I write this, congratulations.

    Matthew, PledgeBank
  • Hell yeah!
  • Congratulations! This is a big day for the FSP!

  • FTL, FTW!

Good luck freedom lovers! I hope to join you all some day!
  • In spite of a very busy winter here in the most liberal place in the US (Humboldt Co. CA) where I own a business I just decided to join the first 1000 AND come to Concord on Feb. 22 2007 (to the conference) to get my first sight of NH and the Free State People. I will read some NH history, geography, and current news to try and get the basics. I hope to begin a new business in NH and become active in helping achieve LIBERTY IN OUR LIFETIME.

  • New Hampshire shall be a beacon of liberty for the rest of our fine country to emulate for generations to come. I'll see you all soon.
Jeff, 10 years ago. Abusive? Report it!
  • We made it! F1K is reached! I seriously didn't think it would succeed in time, but now we have over 1,000 pledges! I will be moving sometime in late 2008 no matter what, but it's nice to have some vindication and positive success for PR purposes.
  • We are so glad the first 1000 is reached. We are thoughtfully considering the move from British Columbia, Canada. We're pretty sure it's a matter of WHEN, not IF.
  • News of the pledge making it is now on Digg. Talk about it and Digg the story if you wish, http://digg.com/politics/Free_State_Proj...
Keith, 10 years ago. Abusive? Report it!
  • Is pledge bank going to continue to receive new "movers" who may have been sitting on the fence or have just heard about the first 1000 due to news coverage? Perhaps January 2007 could bring in another hundred or more! Are people still being incouraged to sign up?
  • January 2, 2007,
I am among the signers of the first 1000 pledge and just got word that the goal has been met. This is a milestone for the Free State Project, and I commend those that have worked so hard in order to aquire this goal. I learned of the first 1000 at the LP National Convention in Portland this past July, but I did not sign until December when it appeared to be a lost cause. It's a long move from WA to NH, and I had to know I that I was needed before jumping on board.
Well, I'm moving to NH soon. Going to be a "Live free or die" tycoon!
So much for my paritiy of Frank Zappa's tune.
See you at the next Porc Fest,
    Dan Goebel
  • I have succeeded in transferring my job to New Hampshire (my home state). My wife in I will be moving back to Manchester from Saint Petersburg Florida 2/15/07. Looks like it is time to turn in the roadster for another Jeep. ;)
  • My wife, Jennifer E. Manuse, and I have moved to southern New Hampshire. We purchased our first house in Derry, NH, on May 25, 2007. We moved in on June 9, 2007. We left behind Massachusetts and all its socialist ideals and Oklahoma, Texas and New York before that. We are happy to have fulfilled our promise as members of the First 1,000 and can't wait to see the rest of you join us who haven't yet. Hopefully we'll reach that 20,000 number and can start to turn this country around. The founders are smiling at us, and so is God.
  • I am a NH native, have lived here all of my life. I have nothing but great things to say about the state, and am equally as pleased to see that other people appreciate our quality of life as much as myself and my family do.

I am a Realtor with the Keller Williams office in Bedford, NH. I would be happy to assist any/all of you with your move to NH. I will commit weekends to helping you find the right town(s) for you and your families. Feel free to call me at 603.305.7006 or email @ Lauren@NHHomePro.com. To browse a complete list of the properties for sale in NH, and find your next home in the Granite State...visit www.NHHomePro.com.

    Thanks and good luck!
  • I made the move the 17th of June 2007, just in time for PorcFest. I came with only one plan: Wing it.

I am now caretaking at the Landing Zone in Grafton, where we just hosted our first incoming Porcupine. I've done odd jobs, made lots of friends, and I wonder why anybody would hold out. Just do it!
