Tory backbencher David Maclean has sponsored a private members' bill to make members of parliament exempt from the Freedom of Information Act.

On 18th May, the Freedom of Information (Amendment) Bill secured its third reading by 96 votes to 25, a majority of 71.

  • Erm, forgive me but I thought we lived in a democracy. Some distant memory of ancient Greek lessons reminds me that the etymology of the term includes some concept to do with the "people". If we cannot hold our own representatives to account, if we cannot examine their actions freely, then precisely how are we a democracy? Information is the life blood of a free society. For shame MPs! Smoke all you want, but leave us our freedoms!
