Firstly on behalf of Saor Alba I would like to apologise that we did not comment sooner, however it is good to see that so many people are willing to donate to the cause of a Scottish Olympic team, we hope the funds will be put to good use. Saor Alba

P.s. They only made up that verse after The Jacobites defeated British (not English) forces at the Battle of Prestonpans.

Understood about NI, I forgot that its Team GB and not Team UK at the Olympics. I stand Corrected.

I am Well aware that the Union Jack has the St Georges Cross in front, but I see the saltire too. A great deal of time and effort went into the design to make both sides happy,
(designed for a Scottish King in 1603)

take a look at the Pre-1801 version, a very prominemt Saltire is seen. Losing the St Paddys X might make a lot of people happy anyway.

And by the way, England doesnt have an official National Anthem, God Save the Queen is actually the UK anthem and became unnoficially "English" once Scotland and Wales made up their own.

The anti-scots verse is from the 18th Century, very old and only one of a variety of different versions that have been written over the years, so it doesnt bother me...

Flower of Scotland has a little bit of anti-Englishness in it too? maybe?

"Sent him homeward tae think again!" even older!

Apologies to all for going off topic about this. Maybe we should take this outside ( Rolling up sleeves! )

Murray Douglas -

Northern Ireland participate as part of an all Ireland team (they make up 20% of it).

The Union Jack has the English George Cross in front of all other parts. The English National Anthem has a anti-Scottish second verse.

I think a Scottish Team should be proud to compete against the rest of the world. This would be a fantastic message to our young people - Scottish Team members would be more likely to be able to visit schools to encourage fitness and health. As a teacher in glasgow, I know our young people NEED more positive Scottish role models. Renton and Sickboy should be placed in the bin as teen heroes.

I think that Scotland should be proud to participate with the rest of our wider nation states. Namely NI, Wales and England.
The United Kingdom is a fantastic diverse place, As a proud Scot and Brit I beleive that we should not be so fussy about being seperate from everyone else.

The Union Jack proudly represents Scotland too! No England flag at the Olympics! No Saltire either!

Cheers....

As a primary school teacher I can only see benefits for Scotland and
Scotland's young people in having an Olympic Team, this would be an
excellent opportunity to associate heroes with health and enduring
participation in sports at all levels.

Scotland should have the ability to compete under its own flag like any other country in the world - the Olympic spirit is strong in Scotland.

I can't think of a greater disincentive for Scots athletes than having to stand under a union jack and listen to god save the queen. At least you can use the mute button at home !
