"I will donate 8% - 10% of the total funds raised to Las Madres de La Plaza de Mayo but only if 10 facebook friends will donate whatever you can to help me raise $6,000 to get to Argentina this winter so I can hand the organization the donation in person!."

Hello everyone! My name is Marcos Polonia and as you may have read on my Facebook updates, I am trying to get to Argentina for a study abroad program.
http://getmetoargentina.chipin.com/study...
It occurred to me that I was approaching funding this trip from a completely selfish & unreasonable place. I thought to myself that this is an opportunity to do something good in another country that has had a tumultuous past and a hopeful future. In the late 70's/early 80's, Argentina was in the grips of a dictatorship. Many young Argentines, mostly between the ages of 18-30, were left of the political spectrum - union organizers, marxists, college students, etc. These young men & women were "disappeared" by the regime in power. Many times, those young women were pregnant. The regime would arrest & torture these pregnant women, kill them and steal their offspring as spoils of war for those who were loyal to the government. Las Madres de La Plaza de Mayo have been working for nearly 30 years to bring those children back to their families. Even today, in 2010, people my age are realizing that their entire lives have been based on lies. This is a topic that many who know me know is very close to my heart. For some reason, these stories have had a big impact on why I have such a fascination with Latin American history. My idea is this - help me raise the $6000 necessary to make this trip, and I will donate a portion of the total so that the Madres de La Plaza de Mayo can continue their work - every year they get closer to having closure to this dark period in their lives. All they want is to bring their families back together. Won't you help? Thanks so much in advance! Feel free to donate whatever is in your power to donate!
