  • Why stop there? why not place tickets on all those 'ordinary' cars that are left parked on pavements, cycleways, opposite junctions and on bends. Why not 'fine' all those users who drive half a mile for the weekly shopping trip, or to drop little johnny off at school because he can't be bothered to walk or cycle. Why not campaign to raise the minimum driving age to 21 so as to reduce the number of immature drivers on the roads. Why not try educating pedestrians that roads are not footpaths. Consider that the Fiat Panda is a 4 x 4, and so is the new Bentley, Consider also that a Landrover Discovery has the same wheelbase as a new Mini and is shorter overall than a Mondeo. Most Suv's consume the same amount of fuel as their lesser counterparts and the same emission standards apply ( see DOT guidelines), Tyres last longer so reducing manufacturing requirements, and because drive is transmitted to all four wheels, less damage is committed to road surfaces. Incidentally, how many SUV's have mauled children whilst parked? For goodness sake get a grip. Incidently, should you continue with this action, its commonly known as flyposting. Flyposting is illegal and those responsible can be prosecuted through the magistrates’ courts. Where an offence is proven fines of up to £1,000 per poster can be issued and, in the case of a continuing offence, £40 for each day during which the offence continues after conviction.

You can see others on http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk if you're so inclined, other makes will give similar comparisons. SUVs tend to be heavier than family saloons and thus require more energy to move, this also affects tyre wear negatively and causes increased damage to the road surface.

  • Well Jay, I had a new Vectra as a hire car recently and the fuel consumption was no where near the figures you quote mainly because of the bad congestion on the local roads I expect, however A Discovery 300Tdi towing two and a half tons will return, on average between 30-35 mpg, tyres on average are lasting 60K miles, Discovery V8i On LPG returns 25mpg when compared to its petrol equivalent, which in all cases is far better than cars of the eighties and nineties - Mk1 fiesta 1600 20-25 mpg round town, Mk 1 Golf 18-22, To be more honest, the point I should have made is that any vehicle given a specific size and weight will use the same amount of fuel. The Audi A8 at 6 ltrs ( a 4x4 but not a SUV) gets about 18 mpg, BMW 5 series a similar figure, The new Transit albeit a diesel, betters your Vectra and can carry 16 people. But is the case really about fuel consuption or Co2 emission?, Catalysers rob engines of power and convert Co into Co2 with added emissions of palladium, Titanium and other substances harmful to health, quietly ignored by the majority of governments. Both BL and Ford developed engines that were far less polluting without a catalyser than most modern engines are with them, but the designs were shelved because the government decided we HAD to have catalysers. This country still has freedom of speech, and I believe, the freedom to own whatever takes your fancy is also included, without critisism. Independant studies have proved that vans are the highest killers of children on the roads, followed by pick-ups, SUV's and cars, but it has also been proved that modern cars with their low bonnets and wedge shaped fronts tend to break a childs legs at the knee, throwing them up and into the windscreen causing severe injury and possibly lifetime paralysis and/or brain damage. One last point, visibility in cars is dreadful compared to SUV's especially when in heavy traffic so you probably wouldn't even see that child, cyclist, or animal until it was too late. P.S. how many airbags and unused seatbelts have been responsible for children being killed or severely injured INSIDE the car.

  • I think John Abbot makes a reasoned argument that I agree with wholeheartedly. Surely a nicer method would be getting people to use a site such as carbonneutral.com rather than antagonising them with fake parking tickets?
  • You should be quite wary about labelling SUVs as bad for the environment. I have a 2004 Chevy Suburban. The "epitome" of the SUV. Despite it being something like a 50 year old model.

Yet my SUV's fuel consumption is better than a Toyota Prius.

No, I am not kidding. Why, no how, could I say this seriously? Simple. I run E85 in my Suburban. It is driven 95% in town, hauling around my three kids. I get about 11MPG, but only of fuel (MPGf)

You see, E85 is only 15% gasoline. So let us do some math. Say I get 10MPG on E85 (the math is easier this way ;) ). How does that compare to the Prius? Very well.

At 10 miles per gallon of fuel (MPGf), I will use 10 gallons of fuel to go 100 miles. Since only 15% is gasoline, I used 1.5 gallons of gasoline per hundred miles.

Meanwhile let us assume 50 MPGg for the Prius. So it will use 2 gallons of gasoline.

That means the Prius would be getting 50MPGg, as expected. But my Suburban is getting 66.67 MPGg. And it is cleaner than the Prius. The manufacture of the fuel is much more eco-friendly, being nearly carbon-neutral, renewable, and cleaner burning. Not to mention less sludge and wear/tear on the engine meaning lower maintenance over time.

So I suggest that if you *really* want to help things out, don't risk getting in legal trouble by putting fraudulent "tickets" on SUVs.

Doing things to actually improve things are far better and productive than mere antagonizing of random people.

  • Some years ago, I heard that a motorist had had the idea of keeping his own fake parking ticket, which he placed on his car windshield when he parked. So when a parking warden came by, this guy did not get a ticket, because he already had one.

I think the powers that be are probably wise to this by now.
